Aristolochia Cretica Cretan Birthwort Dutchman's Pipe
Aristolochia Cretica is endemic to Crete, growing mainly in the east of the island. It is a climbing plant, its stem growing up to 60 cm. tall . The ushaped, tubular flowers are maroon and covered inside with white hairs.
Cistus Salviifolius Sage-Leaved Cistus
This is a small shrub which has white flowers of 4 to 5 cm. diameter. The leaves are hairy on the under side, similar to those of common sage, which give it its common name.
It is a member of the rockrose family and flowers from March until May.
Cynoglossum Creticum Blue Hound’s Tongue
Growing to about 30 cm. tall this plant flowers from March to June. The stem is covered with short, soft hairs and the leaves are also very hairy. The flower buds are purple but open into blue flowers with dark blue veins.
Malcolmia Flexuosa Sea Stock
Flowering between March and May, this plant has pale pink, purply-pink or lilac flowers which lighten towards the centre. It is a small, annual plant and is found near the sea on sandy shores, cliffs or even in old walls.
Ranunculus Asiaticus Turban Buttercup
This plant of the buttercup family grows from 10 to 40 cm in height with up to 5 flowers on one stem. It flowers between March and May. The anemone-like flowers, 2 to 8 cm. in diameter are usually white, very pale pink or yellow. Plants with pink flowers are found occasionally but those with red flowers very rarely.
The Minoans used this flower as a pattern for decorating frescoes, paintings and pottery.
Tragopogon Sinuatus Avé-Lall Goat’s Beard
The pink or purple flowers of this plant appear in March and April. The plant normally grows to 50 cm. tall but can grow up to twice that height.
The Greek philosopher, Theophrastus named the plant Goat’s Beard probably due to the appearance of the fruiting flower head.
It is also known as Salsify and is often cultivated for its sweet, edible tap root.
